Where Strategy, Speed, and Teamwork Collide

The BTS Math Battle is a multi-school/site academic competition created to make mathematics feel alive, exciting, and worthy of a stage.

Hosted by Better Than School Enterprises (BTS), Math Battle brings students together to think under pressure, represent their schools and sites, and compete in an environment where academic preparation matters. It is fast-paced, team-based, and intentionally designed to celebrate the kind of thinking that too often goes unseen: strategy, focus, communication, resilience, and confidence.

Students do not just solve problems. They make decisions, trust their preparation, defend their reasoning, and learn how to stay composed when the room is moving quickly around them.

That is what makes Math Battle more than a tournament.

It is an academic experience built the BTS way.

Better Than School Math Battle

A New Stage for Academic Excellence

Math Battle was created from a simple belief: students should feel the weight, pride, and energy of academic competition.

In too many spaces, math is treated as quiet work, as something students do alone, at a desk, with the goal of getting through it. Math Battle changes the atmosphere. It brings math into the open. It asks students to prepare, perform, collaborate, and rise to the moment.

The competition is designed to be serious without being stale, exciting without being chaotic, and challenging without losing sight of student growth. Each round requires students to balance speed with accuracy, confidence with humility, and individual responsibility with team trust.

The result is a learning experience that feels competitive, meaningful, and memorable.

How Math
Battle Works

Each round of Math Battle is built around a connected set of math challenges. Students work through multi-step problems that build in difficulty and require more than quick calculation. They have to read carefully, organize information, choose a strategy, and show their thinking.

The format keeps each round active and purposeful. Students must know when to move quickly, when to slow down, when to trust themselves, and when to lean on the team.

Individual Roles.
Team Stakes.

Teams are made up of students with assigned roles, or “legs.” For the first three questions of a round, each leg is responsible for their own problem. That gives every student a defined moment to lead, solve, and contribute.

The final question of the round becomes a team collaboration challenge. Students work together, combine their thinking, and decide on a final answer as a group.

By the end of each round, Math Battle has tested both individual excellence and collective problem-solving.

Speed, Accuracy,
and Resilience

Speed matters, but it does not replace accuracy. Teams that buzz in first earn the opportunity to explain their thinking and compete for bonus points. That added layer creates urgency, but students still have to prove they understand the math. The fastest answer only matters when it is also a strong one.

The tournament format adds another layer of purpose. Teams move through first- and second-chance pathways, creating a competition in which a single difficult round does not end the story. Students must recover, regroup, and keep competing.

Math Battle also gives schools, sites, and communities something to rally around. Students are not only competing for themselves; they are representing their teams, their schools or sites, and the communities that helped prepare them. The energy, pride, and camaraderie of the event are part of the experience. Academic excellence becomes something students can cheer for, practice for, and share.

The First Annual BTS Math Battle

In 2026, BTS is preparing to host the inaugural BTS Math Battle on June 6 at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, with 14 schools and sites slated to participate.

This inaugural competition marks the beginning of what BTS intends to grow into a lasting academic tradition – one where students can represent their schools, sites, and teams; families can celebrate academic courage; and communities can see young people take pride in how they think.

BTS Math Battle is being built to return year after year, growing with the students, schools, sites, and communities that make it possible.

Beyond the Battle

Math Battle is part of BTS's broader commitment to creating learning experiences students remember.

Across our programs, we look for ways to make learning more active, more connected, and more meaningful. Sometimes that happens in an after-school classroom. Sometimes it happens during summer enrichment. Sometimes it happens through leadership development, field experiences, creative projects, or competitions like this one.

The setting may change, but the goal remains the same: to give students opportunities that challenge them, support them, and help them see what they are capable of.

Math Battle brings that vision into one tournament. It turns preparation into performance, teamwork into strategy, and academic confidence into something students can feel in real time.
